One minute you’re feeling energetic and the next, you’re completely drained. Does this sound familiar? There are times when everything is seemingly going well in life and yet we feel unhappy, unseen and unappreciated. We may be doing all the things that would normally help in lifting our mood: working out, meditating, cooking our favourite meal, reading a book; but, in spite of that, we feel exhausted and find it difficult to get out of bed.
The varying moods we feel are part of the human experience and by being mindful doesn’t mean blocking out unwanted emotions or negative experiences. The motive is not to avoid hard times but to tackle them mindfully so that we don’t make the situation worse. Bookmarking the shades of blues can help you treat your low moods in a calm and gentle way. Here are some kind ways to cope with it.
Change the perspective
When we feel low, negativity takes precedence and the lens through which we see life changes. In times like these, try to find beauty in the small things - the chirping of birds early in the morning, your coffee made to perfection, a dog sleeping by the pavement. Tune yourself out of those dark thoughts by seeing the beauty in the small moments.
Be kind to yourself
Being unkind to yourself is definitely not going to make you feel better. If it helps, share your distress with your support system. Even if they are unable to provide you with a solution, it may feel good to unburden yourself. You may not always be looking for a solution; sometimes you just need a shoulder to rest on.
Take your time
Mindfully coping with the blues takes time. Being strong,, showing up for yourself and finding ways to process and deal with the feelings takes time. When you choose to feel better is entirely on you and shouldn’t be time bound.
