Amidst the daily hustle bustle of life, it’s imperative that we don’t forget to look after ourselves. In order to have the most fulfilling life, it’s important that we remain healthy - both physically and mentally.
Self-care is an area that most of us usually sideline, as we usually prioritise it last, thinking we can get to it later. Later never arrives, and there eventually comes a point when we either break down completely or are unable to move on with life due to physical or mental exhaustion.
As per a study by the Orlando Science Center, regulating our nervous system is very important, since walking, thinking, feeling, and even breathing are all controlled by the nervous system. They state, ’When you make self-care a routine part of your life, research suggests that you can reduce stress and avoid burnout, which is a feeling of emotional, mental, and even physical exhaustion that can be caused by prolonged stress.’
So rather than focusing on the problem, let's divert our focus towards solving it. Here are some self-care tips to help us become the best version of ourselves!
Don’t discount the importance of physical exercise:
It is a well-established fact that any form of physical activity keeps us fit, energised, keeps the blood circulation going and the body healthy. Yet, many of us avoid taking any action. There is no substitute for physical activity as far as wellness goes. Decide on what your body needs, what is it that you’d like to take up and opt for running, weight training, different sports, yoga, dance or maybe even callisthenics.
Keep your mental health in check:
Make your mental health a priority. To ensure our circumstances or the environment around us don’t bog us down, practice meditation, mindfulness, or listening to calming music. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, cut off from the world for a day or even a few hours by reading good books. There could be other add-ons, depending upon what relaxes you. Decide and choose your destress weapon, and use it!
Engage in spiritual activities to channelise core tendencies:
Positive affirmations can strengthen our core beliefs, making us stronger and more confident. The beauty of this practice is that it also starts reducing self-doubt and builds self-esteem.
Healthy eating habits are non-negotiable:
It goes without saying that everything begins and ends with healthy eating. But knowing and implementing are two different things. Make your food choices mindfully and ensure you combine a range of nutrients – fruits, vegetables, protein and fibre.
Practice the attitude of gratitude:
Maintaining a gratitude journal is a fabulous way to approach life differently! Writing down positive affirmations and offering gratitude for all that we have does wonders for our subconscious mind and core beliefs. Things naturally start manifesting just the way we want them to be.
Plan your finances meticulously:
If one remains careless about money matters, there are consequences for the future. For a well-planned future, seek financial advice from experts and accordingly navigate expenditure as well as savings. For example, maintaining monthly budgets and starting retirement fund could be a great starting point..
Take a break to spend time with nature:
At times taking a backseat from the regular rut is also a great form of self-care. Spend a day at a resort, or a park, or by the seaside. Just doing nothing and being around nature can be a great way to naturally heal ourselves.
Seek therapy to understand yourself better:
Seeking medical help or going for regular mental check-ups or consulting a therapist is not taboo! Be wise enough to make this important decision for yourself if you need it. Don’t hesitate to consult an expert at any point in time.
