A new year sets the precedent for new beginnings, usually. You set particular goals for yourself and term them as your New Year Resolutions that you plan to adhere to in the coming year. However, it so happens that a couple of days into the New Year, your plans go for a toss owing to different reasons. Maybe the schedule you set for yourself doesn’t really work, or there’s a lot more to do in order for you to achieve your target. Maybe you weren’t prepared for the little changes that a big change can bring about.
Whatever the reason may be, setting realistic goals for yourself is the best New Year’s gift you can give yourself. Not only can this help you improve yourself and your settings, but can also give you that sense of achievement we all find empowering. For this, you have to first sort out what your resolutions are, and figure out how to stick to them better.
And if this is something you definitely want to do in 2023, here are five ways you can stick to your resolutions.
1. Choose specific goals: You may have a plethora of goals and have them listed all out. But seeing all those targets can get overwhelming. So it’s best to get into the specifics of what you want to achieve. For example, instead of putting “lose weight”, mention how much you want to lose and how you plan to go about it. Talking to an expert to plan this out better is also going to help you narrow down on a to-do list and help you understand the specific steps involved in achieving your goals.
2. Renew motivation: We understand it is easy to go off the trail, especially when you are challenging yourself to do something new. But if, after a week of trying something new, you feel like you are not doing enough and want to give up, don’t beat yourself up about it. Instead, think about how to get back on track, and keep going. It helps to write down your goals and read them before bedtime and after waking up so they’re always at the back of your mind, and can serve as a motivational factor every day. If there any steps to achieve your goal that seem impossible, break them down or change them.
3. Single-tasking: You’ve heard of multi-tasking, and may have also been in awe of those who could pull off different tasks in one go. Inspired by them, you may have listed down a lot of things that you plan to work on in the New Year. However, it is advisable to focus on one task at a time so that it ensures you are paying full attention to it, and not leave it in the middle to do something else.
4. Start small: Once you have a plan in place, start with taking small steps each day as you work towards achieving your goals. Smaller achievements lead to a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to work towards the bigger goals. If you can get an expert to help out, do that to get that extra dose of motivation.
5. Get a support system: Whether family, friends, or an online community, a support group keeps you accountable and motivated. You are more likely to work on your resolutions when you are aware that your loved ones are looking out for you. It is also advisable, especially if your goals are health, weight or money oriented, to loop in an expert or advisor who will guide you properly when you need the support.
