Have you ever wondered why we take a deep breath, randomly? It’s a scientific fact that we sigh for a quick reset, among other reasons. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Some experts hypothesize that people in anxiety-provoking situations may sigh to gain temporary relief from distress.”
Whether you are overwhelmed with work or having a hard time organising your time, or even finding the current course of your day not enough to help you cope with newfound problems—a reset in your daily routine can help.
Sometimes, deep down we know that we must reset our daily routine but we fail to consciously acknowledge it. Of course, that requires discipline and the willingness to allow things to change—and it can be scary and stressful for many.
You are probably already aware but if you need something to reaffirm what you think is true, here are signs you need to reset your daily routine.
You feel tired all the time
The Australian government’s Better Health system describes fatigue as a constant feeling of tiredness which can be a result of a mix of physical, mental or emotional factors. All of us feel tired at some point, but if you feel this way, day in and day out, it could be underlying health issues or lifestyle factors. Better Health points out that apart from medical issues, fatigue can result from a poor lifestyle and/or stress.
You are not being productive
This one is a no-brainer, and yet we fail to address it. Do you feel you have a lot to do but you are falling short of time? In that case, know that your current routine is not working for you. You will have to push yourself to change it and better organise your day, in order to be productive enough.
Your body is hurting in places you didn’t know existed
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a stressful lifestyle can be evident in unfounded body aches. It asserts that such a lifestyle can cause aches and pains, muscle tension as well as a pounding pain in your chest. Is it your posture? Is it your poor sleep cycle? Is it your stressful routine? Either way, physical pains call for a routine reset.
You are having digestive issues
The Cleveland Clinic also points out that having digestive issues can be a sign of a stressful lifestyle. If you’ve been experiencing acidity or having trouble digesting food, which usually gave you no trouble, the problem could be with your daily routine.
You are having mood swings
According to HelpGuide, one of the world’s top 10 online mental health resources, working too much, without enough time for socialising or relaxing, lack of close, supportive relationships, taking on too many responsibilities, without enough help from others, and not getting enough sleep can all lead to burnout. That in turn can give you anxiety, a feeling of sadness and being all dried up mentally. If this is what you are going through, it’s time to consider a thorough reset of your daily routine.
How to give your daily routine a reset for a better, less stressful life
1) Organise your day better; list down the tasks you need to accomplish and make a plan to do so.
2) Set a time for everything: sleeping, waking up and eating at the same time every day.
3) Include physical exercise in your day.
4) Address the sources of stress, find a solution and methods of coping.
5) Form good habits and work on getting rid of unproductive ones.
6) Build resilience to stress by your choice of self-care techniques.
7) Consult a life coach or a therapist if you need help.
