Headache is a condition characterised by pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. It can range from mild to severe and may be caused by several factors such as stress, dehydration, infections, neurological issues, or other underlying health conditions.
Dr Rupali Satija, DNB Family Medicine explains that headaches are classified into primary headaches (like migraines, tension headaches, and cluster headaches) and secondary headaches (caused by another medical condition, such as sinus infections or high blood pressure).

When To See A Doctor
• When it affects the vision, causes confusion, weakness, or difficulty speaking
• When there is sudden and severe pain (thunderclap headache)
• When the headaches are frequent or worsening
• When a headache occurs after a head injury
• When headaches accompany fever, stiff neck, or seizures
If you’re dealing with a headache, several home remedies can provide relief depending on the type of headache. Dr Rupali recommends some effective options:

Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is a common cause of headaches. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine, if they trigger your headaches.

Apply A Cold Or Warm Compress
Tension headaches & migraines: Use a cold compress on your forehead or neck to reduce inflammation.
Sinus headaches: Apply a warm compress over your nose and forehead to ease congestion.

Rest In A Dark, Quiet Room
Light and noise can make migraines worse. Close your eyes, relax, and take deep breaths.
Massage & Acupressure
Gently massage your temples, neck, and shoulders to reduce tension. Try acupressure by pressing the area between your thumb and index finger for a few minutes.

Herbal & Natural Remedies
Peppermint oil: Apply to your temples for a cooling effect.
Ginger tea: This helps with migraines and nausea.
Lavender oil: Inhaling the scent can promote relaxation.
Caffeine (in Moderation)
A small amount of caffeine (like tea or coffee) can help relieve headaches, but too much may cause rebound headaches.
Improve Sleep & Posture
Lack of sleep can trigger headaches. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep. Poor posture causes tension headaches. Sit straight and stretch often.

Relaxation Techniques
Deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can reduce stress-related headaches. Progressive muscle relaxation (tensing and releasing muscles) can ease tension.
Limit Screen Time
Eye strain from screens can cause headaches. Take breaks and adjust brightness.
Manage Triggers
• Maintain a headache diary to track foods, stress, or lifestyle factors that trigger headaches.
• Avoid processed foods, excessive sugar, and strong perfumes/odours, if they worsen your headaches.
If home remedies don’t help or headaches become frequent and severe, it may be time to consult a doctor.
