Exercising regularly and diligently can seem like a daunting task for many of us! It’s definitely not easy to stay committed, with workload, distractions and the constant feeling of inertia.
Technically, we are all aware that working out and staying physically active are key to maintaining physical, mental and spiritual health. However there always seems to be something more appealing or important, which means exercise in put on the backburner.
It is important in such situations to remind ourselves about why we need to work out. Once this is clear, the ’how‘ will automatically follow. Don’t set goals that are too ambitious, as these can overwhelm you. Instead, rather start small, with realistic aims. Slowly up the ante and move forward step by step.

Here are some ways to stay committed and motivated to following an exercise regimen:
1. Be clear on the ‘why’ - Again, be very clear about your reasons for exercise. Why do you need to work out? Is it to keep your weight in check, to build muscle, to ensure agility, or a mix of everything?
2. Experiment with workouts - There are high chances that monotony may set in while exercising, if you follow the same routine every single day. In order to feel excited about your workout, explore new activities. Don’t stick to just one venue - the gym, your home or the jogger’s park. Every couple of weeks, add a new activity to your workout. . It could be swimming, trekking or yoga.

3. ‘Bundle’ your workout - An article by Facet Seven Fitness stated ’Hit two birds with one stone by bundling your workout with an activity you want to do. This ties in with a strategy called temptation building, which involves coupling instantly gratifying ‘want’ activities with engagement in a ‘should behavior’ that provides long-term benefits but requires the exertion of willpower.’ Let’s say you are a music lover, but due to excessive workload, you don’t often find time to listen to your favourite playlist. In this case your motivating factor to hit the gym (or any other place you usually workout) is the ability to listen to your favourite music along with a physical workout.
4. The 10-minute rule - A great way to stay motivated to workout is mentioned in an article in Men’s Health. Tell yourself that you will workout for just 10 minutes during the times when you are least motivated. These 10 minutes could include a little warm up, one exercise or may be a quick circuit. If nothing else, you haven’t skipped the workout altogether. It could also give you the initial push, making you feel charged up to complete the workout.

5. The ‘Fun’ factor - At all times, keep in mind that exercise needn’t be boring and can be enjoyed. The idea is to give it 100 per cent and enjoy the process. Come up with creative ways –such as setting yourself a challenge, or getting into a healthy fitness competition with a friend. Take one day at a time and work towards your goals slowly but surely.
