When one talks of apple cider vinegar (ACV), it’s almost always associated with ‘salad dressing’, but there is more to it than that. Historically, ACV was used to fight infection, heal wounds and manage blood sugar levels. Over the years, research hasn’t been able to suggest conclusive evidences for every use, but in a few cases, it has been proven effective. Here’s a lowdown.
1. Lower blood sugar levels and manage diabetes
Reports suggest that ACV has proven effective for those with Type 2 diabetes. A research conducted under the National Library Of Medicine in 2007 showed that diabetic patients who consumed two tablespoons of ACV at bedtime could see a noticeable reduction in their morning blood glucose readings. In addition, as per the American Diabetes Association, vinegar was found to “significantly improve” insulin sensitivity after meals in insulin-resistant people.
2. Weight loss
A few studies suggest that consuming one spoon of this wonder ingredient daily with a restricted calorie diet was found to reduce body weight, body mass index (BMI), and plasma triglycerides. It was also seen that ACV helped reducing appetite.
3. Hair health
It is established that ACV can lower the scalp’s pH and hence, is a common ingredient in shampoos. It also has antimicrobial properties which help maintain scalp health by driving off bacteria that may be weakening your tresses from the roots.
4. Heart health
If you have been advised to take extra care of your heart, it’s a good option to include apple cider vinegar in your lifestyle. It is known to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels which are known to increase the risk of heart diseases. According to a certain study, it has also been found to reduce blood pressure.
5. Source of probiotics
Dairy products such as yogurt and buttermilk are rich in probiotics that help in keeping our gut in good health. But, it’s possible that some are allergic to them (as they can cause inflammation) or some have opted to go vegan. In such a scenario, ACV is the way forward. It provides the probiotics one needs for good health without running the risk of inflammation.
It is also important to remember that while ACV has proven to possess benefits, one cannot expect results overnight. In some health conditions, it’s advisable that you first consult your health practitioner before changing your diet, given the fact that this is not a substitute for medication.
