When it comes to a beauty staple that almost everyone has in their vanity, Vaseline tops the list. When petroleum jelly was first launched in 1865 by chemist Robert Chesebrough, it was made to heal dry skin. But, over the years, we’ve realised that this product has limitless uses. Recently, Vaseline made big news when the Korean beauty trend ‘slugging’ took off. This method of hydrating dry skin includes finishing your night routine with a light layer of petroleum jelly to seal in your skincare and prevent moisture loss
From basic beauty hacks (think a universal brow gel) to seriously life-changing hair tips (bye-bye split ends), here are some Vaseline hacks that will appreciate this old-fashioned formula a whole lot more!
Hack 1: Eyebrow setting gel
Looking to keep your unruly brows in place? Take some Vaseline on a clean spoolie brush, and work it through your eyebrows. It is safe to use on your skin, but if you have acne-prone skin or tend to break out on certain parts of your face, stay away from constant use, since applying too much of it can cause clogged pores.
Hack 2: Lip balm
Vaseline is a known occlusive, which means it tends to retain moisture very well. But, it does not hydrate chapped lips. So, we recommend exfoliating first, then dabbing some Shea Butter on your lips. Finish off with a light layer of Vaseline and you’re set!
Hack 3: Natural highlighter
If you’re all about that natural glam, Vaseline will be your beauty BFF. Dab some product on the high points of your face for a dewy glow. If you’re looking for a blinding glow, just mix some shimmer eyeshadow with petroleum jelly, and apply.
Hack 4: DIY conditioner for split ends
Looking for a solution to tame frizzy flyaways and split ends? Simply dab some Vaseline between your palms, and run your fingers through your ends.
Hack 5: Lip primer
Vaseline does a brilliant job at smoothening out the surface of your lips, making lipstick application smooth. Smear some petroleum jelly on your lips and wait for five minutes. Swipe off the excess and then apply your favourite lip colour.
Hack 6: DIY mascara
Ran out of mascara? Take some petroleum jelly on your palm and dip your mascara wand in it until the product is evenly distributed. Apply a light layer to your top and bottom lashes. Remember, this is a quick fix and that rubbing your eyes will cause the product to transfer.
Hack 7: Make-up remover
Often, make-up removers can be harsh on the skin. The best alternative is using Vaseline as it gently erases all traces of mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, and even lash glue. The fact that it is cheap doesn’t hurt too!
Hack 8: Moisturiser
Use it to moisturise your hands, feet, and even your face (unless you have acne-prone skin). It is generally deemed safe for all skin types, but definitely does
