As a young adult, I often think about my own future and what it may look like as I get older. But lately, I can't help but notice the challenges that my mother and grandmother face as they try to keep up with their advancing age. It's heartbreaking to see these once-unstoppable women, who used to work tirelessly without even a sigh, now struggling to manage even a fraction of what they used to do. The decline has been gradual, not something that you’d notice every day, but every once in a while, it hits you just how much their health, complaints and insecurities have increased over time. There are things they struggle with now that once seemed inevitable.
While I know that I can't stop the ageing process, I am motivated to do what I can to help these women navigate the challenges of growing old. Their needs have become increasingly important to me and, with the right support and resources, we can all help older women lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives. Here are a few ways we can all make a difference.
1. Provide companionship:
First and foremost, it's important to stay connected with the older women in your life. I have seen how loneliness is a significant problem for many. They are always on a lookout for people to talk to, interact with and to just feel human presence. Simple things like calling, visiting or sending a letter can make all the difference to their mental health and wellbeing. Consider setting aside time for your loved ones or volunteering with an organisation that matches volunteers with seniors who need companionship.
2. Help with technology:
Technology is something many older women struggle with, which can lead
to social isolation and difficulty accessing vital services. Kudos to those who have adopted digital devices and incorporated them into their lives. But they may still need help with things like setting up a smartphone or tablet, navigating social media or online banking. Offer to help older women with technology, such as setting up a new smartphone or teaching them how to use video conferencing apps to stay connected with friends and family.
3. Assist with household tasks:
Tasks that once seemed easy can become challenging as one ages. Offer your assistance with daily tasks or errands, or consider hiring a professional cleaner or meal delivery service for them. It will take a huge weight off their shoulders and make them feel more supported.
4. Encourage physical activity and healthy eating:
Finally, it's important to encourage older women to take care of their physical and mental health. Healthcare can be complicated and older women may struggle to navigate the system. Encouraging them to exercise, eat well and stay engaged in activities they enjoy can help them stay healthy and happy. You could suggest fitness classes or sports that are specifically designed for older adults. Most women, during their menopause, struggle with mental health issues like depression or anxiety, so it's important to understand their day-to-day issues and encourage them to indulge in physical activities and seek professional help, if needed.
5. Be patient and understanding
The world is moving fast and while it is important for these women to keep up, some help from the younger generation is always welcome. So, instead of lashing out at them, patiently explain the newer nuances and notions of the world. Avoid becoming frustrated or dismissive when they struggle. Tell them how the world is changing and what’s happening around them; how people function, and how things have changed since they were younger.
While there are many ways you can help older women improve their lives and make a difference to their wellbeing, these are a few examples of how you can support them and help build a more inclusive and supportive society for everyone.
