A 2015 study by Dove showed that mothers influence their daughter’s beauty habits more than celebrities. The report also stated that it is the real and genuine relationships in our lives that leave an impression on the way we look at our beauty routines. A surprising 84 per cent of women said that they trust the other women in their lives when it comes to beauty tips and hacks, over celebrities. Taken aback? Think about all the times you bought a product because your best friend recommended it or consider how you frantically call your mum to discuss the little zit that you see coming up right before a big day. Below, find three heart-warming stories about beauty lessons mums today want to share with their girls.
“One thing I see my daughter do is diligently look at me from the corner of my eyes as I do my morning routine. I’d love to convey it to her that beauty begins with taking care of your skin inside out. What you eat and apply on your skin are equally important. Oh, and just apply sunscreen no matter what. Whether you’re staying in or stepping out, always wear your SPF.”
–Radhika Kalia, mum to five-year-old, Amaya.
“These days I feel like I am being taught beauty lessons by my kids! I want to tell [my daughters] that beauty begins with being kind and happy. Take time to figure out what you like and what you don’t. Don’t feel pressurised to do things a certain way just because you see it on social media or in movies. Groom yourself to your liking, never for others!”
–Khyati Jhaveri, mum to eight-year-old Heeya and four-year-old Jiana
“I want to tell my daughter three things: Wash your face twice a day, no matter what, wear make-up only if you want to, and remember that everything you see on social media isn’t real. Today, you can erase any insecurity you have using filters so it is helpful to remind yourself not to take Instagram too seriously. Also, the most important thing you can do is be yourself! Enjoy playing with make-up if you want or don’t wear any. It is all about your choice.”
–Dhwani Kedia, mum to 13-year-old Rhea
