All around India, Diwali is celebrated with great zeal and warmth. The festival of light is celebrated by lighting up every house with lights and diyas, sharing presents and sweets, and setting off fireworks.
Even though people like shooting off fireworks and seeing a light and sound show, it may be a nightmare for animals. The crackers irritate the animals' hearing and cause them to be terrified to death. The smoke from the pyrotechnics can make them feel queasy and cause them to lose their appetite.
During the celebration, there are a few things you can do to keep dogs and other stray animals safe.
• Keep your pet inside, where it will be peaceful, and the crackers will not be too loud.
• Close all your windows and doors.
• Organise a fireworks display with your family and neighbours in an open field distant from the residential area.
• Encourage people to use environmentally friendly crackers that are less hazardous and make less noise.
• Owners can use cotton to protect their pets' ears, but you should always obtain advice from a veterinary professional.
• Before the festivities begin, take your dog for a stroll during the day.
• Keep your pets hydrated to help them feel less anxious.
• To calm them down, act normally and play quiet music. The room's ambience is critical to make them feel safe.
• Request that individuals clean the compound so that no burnt crackers are left on the ground, preventing dogs from being injured.
• Make sure you have a first-aid kit on hand in case something goes wrong.
• Make sure your pets are wearing collars with your contact information and identifying tags. If they run away, someone who discovers them will be able to call you.
• If you're feeding stray dogs, make sure you're able to lead them to a safe place to spend the night.
• Keep multiple bowls of their food and water around their designated so that they can access them, in case they are forced to move.
It is also important to sensitise those around you about the effects of firecrackers and loud noises on animals. Even one listening ear can make a huge difference.
