Have you ever gone on a date with someone and thought everything was great until they did or said something that was completely against your belief system? You know, how in Friends, Phoebe wakes up one day in the arms of her man-in-uniform boyfriend, Gary, simply admiring the moment, when he goes ahead and shoots a bird? That was it, for animal-loving, anti-fur, vegetarian Phoebe!
For me, it is very important that someone I date should not be a sexist and definitely not one of those people who get all touchy about feminism and say things like, ‘Oh, you’re one of those feminists.’ Yes, I am and last I checked it was a good thing to be. Similarly, I want someone who does care about the environment, in whatever capacity they can.
Do you get annoyed by the littering kind who will throw garbage everywhere, call for much more food than they can handle and indulge themselves at the cost of the environment? Do you seek someone who at least tries to be somewhat cautious, if not behaving like an eco-saint?
If you feel the same way, here are a few green flags to watch out for when looking for an environment-conscious date.
They are an outdoorsy person
Someone who is environment-conscious is a person who loves nature. So if this person likes a walk on the beach, a stroll in the park, a hike in the hills or a night of camping under the stars, they may be in love with the outdoors. Even when they pick a café or a restaurant, you will see them naturally being inclined towards the greener ones.
They don’t exploit the complementary resources
Sure, the tissues are complimentary. You can ask for as many plates as you like. But it doesn’t mean you go crazy with the usage. It’s free for you, not the earth and many people don’t understand that. If your date is being cautious about their consumption, it’s a green, green flag I say!
They order what they can eat
Food wastage is a turn-off for many. It’s understandable if it happens in unforeseen circumstances, but ordering more than you can consume is not something an eco-conscious person will do. Even if you take the food home, the disposable containers are often not eco-friendly in many restaurants. A date who orders and doesn’t waste food is definitely all kinds of yummy!
They opt out of using disposables
If given a choice, they would prefer having their coffee in mugs and not takeaway cups. They would opt out of getting free disposable cutlery when they order takeaway. They do their best, to reduce the number of disposables they use. That’s a sign of someone who cares about the environment.
They offer to walk short distances
Instead of hoping in a vehicle for short distances, they walk it out. If you are café/bar hopping, they suggest taking a walk if it’s close by (save fuel, save energy). Of course, they take your comfort into account as well.
