Coming from a girl who loves fabrics and bedding, it’s no surprise that my idea of a perfect bed is one that’s cosy, elegant and yet comfortable and is one that’s designed to help me get a restful night’s sleep. Sporting a bed that looks straight out of a décor magazine is a dream. But one can still have beds made neatly enough to win our mother’s approval. Follow these simple steps to ensure you have a cosy and inviting bed that lets you sleep easy.
Invest In Good Quality Sheets
A bad bedsheet can ruin your sleep. Always go for bedsheets that are 100 per cent cotton. Look for the quality, not the thread count. A high thread count doesn't necessarily mean the cotton used is good quality. You can also try sheets with cotton blended with Lyocell, an eco-friendly fibre that's known to absorb moisture.
Change Your Sheets Weekly
Fresh sheets every seven days is a must for comfort. The rest of your bedding should be vacuumed or cleaned every two to three months.
Learn To Tuck
Smooth, comfortable sheets can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a night spent trying to get comfortable.
1. Iron your sheets
2. Start at one of the upper corners of your mattress, and pull the fitted sheets elastic down and over the mattress corner. Smooth the sheet out, and repeat on the other upper mattress corner. Move to the foot of the bed, and finish pulling the fitted sheet into place, smoothing out all the edges and taking care to cover the entire mattress.
3. Lay your flat sheet over your mattress, and spread the sheet out, centre the sheet so it drapes evenly over both sides of the bed. Smooth away any creases. Tuck the bottom of the flat sheet under your mattress, and then move to the side. Grab the corner of the sheet that’s hanging out at the foot of the bed, and fold that corner up until it’s against the side of the mattress. Now tuck in the flat sheet, keeping the folded corner tightly in place to create a neat crease. Repeat on the other side. Do your best to achieve a neat fold at the mattress corners, but don’t agonize over it. Leave 12 to 18 inches of flat sheet untucked at the top of the bed.
Those Who Can’t Sleep Without Their Favourite Blankie
Lay the blanket on the bed and adjust so that the top hem is roughly a pillows-width below the upper edge of the mattress. Spread the sides of the blanket evenly over the mattress
Time To Add Some Character
Whether you have a bedspread, comforter, or duvet, this sets the tone for your style. Lay the blanket or fitted sheet if you prefer not to use a blanket and adjust so the topper is evenly draped over all sides of your mattress.
Invest In Good Pillows
Buy pillows that give your neck enough support. Fluff your sleeping pillows, and prop them against the headboard with the open side of the pillowcases facing the nearest side of the bed.
Keep Your Pillows Clean
1. Keep all of your pillows protected with dust mite covers that you wash every three weeks. Pillowcases go over the dust mite covers.
2. Wash pillowcases every week
3. Wash pillows every two months. If you have decorative pillows that can't be washed, ditch them.
4. Consider replacing your regularly cleaned pillows every two years.
Add Some Textures
Consider throw pillows or fold a throw blanket, thin quilt, or extra blanket, and layer it across the foot of the bed to make it extra cosy.
