The '90s had its fair share of legendary pop culture moments, and while those moments are making a comeback on the runway we have to admit when it comes to home décor the '90s weren't your finest decade.
From word art and lava lamps to over the top headboards, the ‘90s has had its cringe-worthy design moments. Here are all the moments that beg the question, 'What was I thinking?'
Inflatable Furniture
If your home didn't have at least one blow-up couch or chair, can you even consider yourself a 90s kid? A curious mix between a traditional seat and a pool float – inflatable chairs were a big rage!
Here’s the thing though – not only were they bad for your back and uncomfortable, but they also did not match the aesthetic vibe.
Terrazzo
You have definitely seen this if you have visited an office space in the ‘90s, a popular style choice that introduced modern office design in the ‘70s through the 1990s now defeats the minimalistic design trope. It looks dated, shabby and is difficult to maintain.
Lava Lamps
As a cool teenager living it up in the ‘90s, a lava lamp was an absolute must-have. Lava lamps were famous in the '70s, but made a major comeback in the '90s, it gave out a whole extra-terrestrial vibe.
Thanks to being overly used as props in bad-guy scenes, the lamps now give out a sleazy vibe.
Oversized Headboards
Upholstered in velvet and adorned with channel-tufted detail or gold carving giving it a Victorian look, this design style is a thing that should be left in the past. These headboards take up too much space, are a nightmare to maintain and make the room look smaller.
Matching Curtains
We have all grown up in houses with sofas that match the curtains. My house had a floral print curtain with maroon roses that matched the maroon sofa. Cute? I think not. Matching works only if the design and vibe are monochrome and minimalistic.
Fake Fruits
We may have aah’s and ooh’d at these wax marvels as kids. But honestly, fake fruits on the table are an atrocity.
Plastic Table Covers/Mats
Often used to protect table cloths, not only were these harmful to the environment but they would also stain leaving them looking discoloured.
Lace Table Cloth/Dollies
This is one cottage core aesthetic we don’t miss. They were often paired with plastic covers or floral table cloths. While a little lace doesn’t hurt anyone but this is a major no-no.
Coloured Cabinets
A bright red cabinet on a pea-green or pale yellow wall, sounds familiar? Not only do the cabinets make the space look congested it makes it look gaudy too.
Animal Prints
Unless you are going for a ‘90s villainous vibe, zebra or cheetah prints should be tossed.
