It is said that clutter is a physical manifestation of what is going on in your head, and vice versa.
Thus, it’s crucial that one takes the necessary steps to declutter, both your space and mind. Here are a few hacks that may help. You can thank us later.
1. Match and store
We understand, storing linens can be a task. However, a time and space saving trick is to stuff all contents of the bedding set (pillowcases and bedsheets) in one pillow to be able to save space, and avoid the hassle of misplacing them when changing bedsheets.
2. Oprah says…
This trick has its roots in The Oprah Winfrey Show. Arrange your clothes on hangers facing your closet. Now, every time you wear an outfit, simply turn the hanger in the opposite direction. Continue to do so for a few months, and take a look at the hangers that are untouched. These garments need to go.
3. If it’s a no, time to let go
This is from the minimalist rule book, also known as the 90/90 rule. Take a good look at all the items that are not frequently used—electronics, cutlery, and stationery , and assess if you have used them in the last 90 days, or are likely to use them in the next 90 days. If the answer is no, you already know what to do.
4. First impressions
Consider yourself to be a first-time visitor at your place. Make a note everything that seems out of place. That way, you will instantly know what needs to stay and what needs to go. Additionally, take before and after pictures, as once you have an idea of how your space ‘could’ look, it’ll motivate you to start decluttering.
5. Give every day
When you get something home, ensure there is space for it. How, you ask? By giving away the things you don’t need. One way to go about it could be to give one thing away every day, regardless of any new items you receive. Start small, with stationeries and toys, followed by shoes, clothes, accessories, or even décor. This way, you would have given away 365 things at the end of one year. Can you imagine the amount of space it can create?
