Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom will head a 14-member Indian boxing team at the Boxam International Tournament that is being held in Castellon, Spain, from March 1 to 7. The team is said to have left for Spain in the early hours of February 28, according to a statement released by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). Incidentally, the tournament also opens on the boxer’s 38th birthday.
Apart from Kom herself, the team also includes Manish Kaushik, India’s Commonwealth Games silver medallist (in the 63kg category). Kom and Kaushik are said to be the team’s key highlights during the tournament. This will be first time they return to the ring since the Asian Olympic Qualifiers that took place in Jordan in March 2020.
This highly-competitive event will see the participation of 19 nations and their Olympics-bound boxers. Among the members of the Indian contingent, 14-year-old boxer Jasmine, who made a name for herself during the national camp, is said to be accompanying the boxers to Spain for her maiden senior tour. She will fight in the 57kg women's category alongside Manisha Moun, the Asian Championship bronze medallist.
