“It was an incredible year for me, winning three consecutive international gold medals and topping it off by winning the Elite women's national boxing championship gold medal,” tweeted Nikhat Zareen after winning the gold medal at the Elite Women’s National Boxing Championship this week. Reigning world champion Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, Lovlina Borgohain, won gold medals by winning their respective finals at the national championship while Railway Sports Promotion Board lifted the team trophy with 10 medals.
While Borgohain, the popular boxer from Assam, won against Arundhati Choudhary of Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) quite comfortably by 5-0 margin in the 75kg category, Zareen defeated RSPB’s Anamika in the 50kg gold medal match to successfully defend her title. Another highlight was the victory of boxer Manju Rani, the 2019 World Championships silver medallist, who handed RSPB its first gold by defeating Tamil Nadu’s S Kalaivani in the 48kg final.
With one gold, two silver and five bronze, Madhya Pradesh secured second place followed by Haryana with two gold and two bronze claiming the third position.
