In an effort to promote women's safety and employment opportunities, the Maharashtra government is all set to introduce the 'Pink Rickshaw' scheme in 10 cities across the state, including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Women & Child Development, aims to provide a secure mode of travel exclusively for women, while generating job opportunities through the deployment of pink e-rickshaws.
Inclusive Economic Growth
The proposed plan involves offering a 20 per cent subsidy to unemployed women who wish to purchase a rickshaw. Applicants will be responsible for 10 per cent of the cost, with the remaining 70 per cent covered through bank loans. Aditi Tatkare, Minister for Women and Child Development, emphasised that the scheme not only provides a means of livelihood for economically disadvantaged women in metros, but also addresses the need for safe transportation for women.

Eco-Friendly Fleet For Women's Safety
Dr Prashant Narnaware, Commissioner of the Women and Child Development department, revealed that 5,000 pink rickshaws will run for the first year, operating in various key cities. The emphasis is on empowering women from diverse backgrounds, contributing to inclusive economic growth.
The 'Pink Rickshaw' initiative plans to use e-rickshaws, aligning with global trends toward sustainable and eco-friendly transport. This not only ensures a modern and efficient fleet but also prioritises the safety and comfort of women passengers.

Learning From The Past
A similar scheme had previously been attempted with the 'Aboli Rickshaw' initiative, which lacked subsidy provisions. It faced challenges and was not successful in achieving its goals in metro cities like Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. The revived 'Pink Rickshaw' scheme aims to learn from past experiences, with phased implementation starting in major urban centres before potential expansion to other regions.
