The BRIT Awards 2021 concluded recently, and what a night it proved to be for female artists, who bagged 85 per cent awards in mix gender categories. It was an unmasked event with over 4,000 attendees, held at London’s O2 Arena.
To talk of the winners, Dua Lipa was awarded ‘Female Solo Artist’ and ‘Mastercard Album’ for Future Nostalgia. During her speech, she thanked the NHS key workers for their services during the pandemic. She also called upon Prime Minister Boris Johnson to give NHS staff a pay rise.
The award for the ‘British Group’ went to Little Mix. Leigh-Anne Pinnock thanked fans for their support and added, “It’s not easy being a female in the UK pop industry. We’ve seen white male dominance, misogyny, sexism and lack of diversity. We’re proud of how we’ve stuck together, stood our ground, surrounded ourselves with strong women and are now using our voices more than ever.” Jade Thirlwall added, “The fact that a girl band has never won this award really does speak volumes. So this award isn’t just for us, it’s for the Spice Girls, Sugababes, All Saints, Girls Aloud, all of the incredible female bands — this one’s for you!”
Furthermore, Taylor Swift made history by becoming the first female artist to receive a Global Icon Award. The other women who were awarded during the night included Billie Eilish (International Female Solo Artist), Arlo Parks (Breakthrough Artist), and Griff (Rising Star), among others.
