Online gaming in India is changing, breaking the stereotype of being a male-dominated realm. According to the Lumikai Gaming Report, a comprehensive study involving 2,317 participants from various backgrounds, women now make up an impressive 41 per cent of India's gaming community. The survey provides interesting insights into the gaming preferences and demographics of players. The male-to-female ratio within the gaming community is a balanced 60:40. These statistics challenge the stereotypical image of a gamer and highlight the growing appeal of gaming to a diverse audience.
Women in Gaming
The study also found that, on average, women in India spend more time gaming than men, challenging the common belief. Women play games for about 11.2 hours per week, while men play for about 10.2 hours per week. This indicates that women are becoming a more significant part of the gaming community.
Gaming as a Career
A recent study, the 'HP India Gaming Landscape Study 2022,' has shed light on a remarkable trend - many women are now considering gaming as a potential career path. 56 per cent of female gamers are thinking about pursuing a career in gaming, driven by their passion for the activity. Additionally, 45 per cent see financial prospects in the gaming industry, such as becoming influencers or game developers. The study reveals that they are intrigued by the prospect of becoming influencers in the gaming community or even diving into the world of gaming software development.
India's Growing Gaming Industry
The Chairman of the India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) pointed out that the gaming industry in India is rapidly expanding and gaining global prominence. The participation of women, making up 41 per cent of the gaming community, adds an exciting dimension to this growth. He notes that gaming startups are on a quest for brand recognition, and the big names in the industry are rallying behind them. Apps are now endorsed by celebrities, and YouTube channels dedicated to game reviews and tutorials are witnessing an unprecedented surge in viewership.
The gaming industry in India is on a growth trajectory, with revenues reaching USD 3.1 billion in 2023, and expected to double to USD 7.5 billion by 2028. The growth is driven by in-app purchases, advertising, and an expanding user base.
What's noteworthy is that 66 per cent of gamers come from non-metropolitan areas, indicating that gaming is spreading beyond urban centers. However, there are challenges, especially in the real money gaming sector, due to recent tax policies and industry consolidation. Overcoming these challenges is crucial for continued growth.
