Carbon dioxide emissions and waste management were the two issues identified as being priority at this year’s Festival De Cannes. The two-way approach to tackle them is reducing carbon emissions and taking actions when reductions are not possible, by offsetting carbon emissions and supporting environmental projects.
Following are the reducing areas of action:
Transport
The Festival’s many spaces are close by, which is why the artistic teams that travel to Cannes are encouraged to walk wherever possible. In 2023, 100 per cent of the car fleet comprises electric vehicles.
Food and drinks
The Festival’s caterers are specified to maintain an eco-responsible approach and include fresh and seasonal produce, offer vegetarian options and tackle food wastage. Usage of plastic water bottles has been eliminated.
The red carpet
The red carpet replacement has been halved since 2021 to close to 1400 kilos of material every edition, a mere 59 per cent of the traditional volume of the carpet used. The volume of the carpet used has been reduced by 24 per cent in 2021 and this year, 650-meter square of carpeting from the red carpet has been eliminated.
Printing
From 2019-2021, the Festival has cut down its usual volumes of printed materials by 79 per cent and continues its efforts to digitalise publications, tickets and film promotional materials.
