British cosmetics, skin care and perfume brand, The Body Shop, has set out to go fully vegan by the year 2023. While 60 percent of the brand’s current products are already vegan-friendly, the company aims to reformulate its entire product range to become 100 per cent vegan in the next two years. Its current vegan-friendly products include the best-selling Tea Tree range, and the brand has already begun veganizing its bestselling and most-loved body butter range.
In a statement, the Global Brand Director of the brand, Lionel Thoreau said, “Our decision to go 100 per cent vegan is a natural next step for The Body Shop. Thanks to our founder Anita Roddick, we were the first beauty company to fight against animal testing in cosmetics, and the first major global beauty brand to use cruelty-free musk in our fragrances. Vegan beauty is a critical next step in our sustainability and environmental endeavours. This, along with our global refill and in-store recycling programs makes The Body Shop a destination for ethically-minded customers.”
A pioneer in cruelty-free beauty, The Body Shop aims to be the first beauty brand globally to have its entire product portfolio registered with the Vegan Trademark by the Vegan Society. The Vegan Trademark, launched in 1990, helps consumers identify that a product is free from animal or animal-derived ingredients.
The brand, which has been a strong advocate of cruelty-free products since 1989 also runs a plastic waste reduction programme, through which it aims to use only 100 percent recycled or reused packaging by 2030.
