In the fifth edition of the Switch Off Research study, commissioned by Vivo and conducted by Cybermedia Research (CMR), the focus was on understanding the 'Impact of smartphones on Parent – Child Relationship’. Covering over 1,500 respondents across major Indian cities, the study sheds light on how excessive smartphone use affects family bonds.
Children's Smartphone Usage
The study reveals that children, on average, start using smartphones at the age of 12, spending around 6.5 hours daily, primarily on gaming. A perturbing 91 per cent of them experience anxiety when away from their phones, highlighting a deep emotional reliance on their gadgets. With 90 per cent engrossed in smartphone activities at home, the findings raise significant concerns about the psychological and social well-being of children in the digital age.
Parental Concerns
Parents express concerns about their children's smartphone usage, citing worries about mental health, social skills, and overall development. The study emphasises that excessive smartphone use is causing strain in parent-child relationships, with 90 per cent of parents admitting occasional irritation when interrupted by their children. Despite spending two hours together every day, 75 per cent of parents engage in simultaneous phone use, questioning the quality of their interactions.
Key Findings
• Parents spend 7.7 hours daily on smartphones, 1.2 hours more than their children.
• 87 per cent and 73 per cent of parents check their phones first thing in the morning and last thing before bedtime.
• On average, children and parents spend about two hours together, but 75 per cent admit to using phones during this shared time.
• 93 per cent of parents and children feel guilty about the quality of their relationships.
• 91 per cent of children feel lonelier due to their parents' smartphone usage.

Influence On Parent-Child Relationships
There is a silver lining though! 94 per cent of parents prioritise meaningful in-person interactions over smartphone scrolling during leisure time. Additionally, 96 per cent of parents and 93 per cent of children express a strong mutual desire to deepen family connections in today's technology-driven world. Vivo will commemorate December 20 as 'Switch Off' day, encouraging Indian consumers to turn off their digital screens and spend quality time with family and loved ones.
