Mizoram has made significant strides in job creation and economic development, according to a recent study conducted by the MSME Export Promotion Council (EPC) and the Confederation of Organic Food Producers and Marketing Agencies. The study, titled ‘Progressive Mizoram presents new vistas of opportunities,’ analysed the period from 2018-19 to 2022-23 and revealed impressive findings.
Over the last five financial years, Mizoram has generated 30,000 job opportunities, with plans to add another 50,000 once ongoing projects are completed. The state announced investment projects totalling ₹7,118 crore during this period, with ₹320 crore worth of projects already completed. Upon the full completion of these projects, Mizoram is set to create a total of 80,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The state's focus on promoting organic farming and tourism has played a pivotal role in providing sustainable livelihoods and fostering startups, as per MSME EPC chairperson D.S. Rawat, who released the study. Mizoram's economy has been growing steadily, with the service sector leading the way, contributing 50.08 per cent to the gross State value-added (GSVA) in 2022-23. The industry sector accounted for 25.09 per cent, while the primary sector (including agriculture and allied activities) contributed 24.83 per cent.
The study predicts that the service sector, driven by a growing number of startups, will continue to grow substantially in 2023-24. However, it emphasizes the importance of faster growth in the agriculture sector to increase income for the majority of the population involved in farming.
Mizoram's per capita income, according to the economic survey for the financial year 2021-22, stood at ₹1,75,896. While this figure slightly decreased compared to the previous fiscal year's estimate of ₹1,79,503, it still reflects overall economic progress.
