The National Commission for Women (NCW) has revealed that it received nearly 31,000 complaints of crimes committed against women in 2022—a number that was highest since 2014, the year when 33,906 complaints were received. In 2022, the NCW received 30,957 complaints, a slight increase from 30,864 complaints in 2021.
Most of these 30,957 complaints, around 9,710, were related to women’s right to live with dignity. These complaints took into account the emotional abuse women face, and most were received from the state of Uttar Pradesh. Apart from that, 6,970 complaints related to domestic violence and 4,600 related to dowry harassment. As many as 2,523 complaints were related to molestation or outrage of modesty, while 1,701 were related to attempted rape and rape, 1,623 were about police apathy against women, and 924 complaints of cyber crimes.
The NCW revealed that 54.5 per cent of the complaints, amounting to 16,872 complaints, were received from Uttar Pradesh. Delhi recorded 3,004 complaints. Maharashtra had 1,381, Bihar had 1,368 and Haryana had 1,362 complaints.
