In response to the concerns raised about the deplorable conditions and lack of security in government hostels for women, the Maharashtra government has taken significant steps to address the issues and ensure the safety and well-being of female hostellers.
The problems ranged from poorly maintained buildings, substandard food quality, unpaid rents for years in rented buildings, to the presence of male staff in women's hostels.
Furthermore, the government will also establish a committee to address the matter of appointing female staff at the hostels, ensuring the safety and comfort of the residents.
As part of the safety guidelines issued for a total of 110 government hostels across Maharashtra, the higher and technical education department has mandated the presence of woman security guards at all girls' hostels. The guards, including women, will be sourced from home department-approved agencies to maintain a high standard of security.
To further improve safety measures, the Maharashtra government has developed a comprehensive set of guidelines. The guidelines include fixed times for supplementary facilities like laundry services, the appointment of female service providers, and the formation of five-member regional committees to review safety measures and continuously assess hostel security. Police officers from nearby stations will also be part of these committees.
The guidelines also emphasise providing training to wardens and hostel staff to ensure the security of the residents. Infrastructure improvements such as safety walls, CCTV cameras, and computerized registration systems will be implemented to enhance security. Attendance reports will be regularly sent to parents to keep them informed about their children's well-being.
The hostels will also establish anti-ragging committees and provide channels for student residents to submit their grievances. The regional committees will oversee the implementation of security measures and infrastructural requirements, reporting their plan of action within a month and conducting security reviews every six months.
The Maharashtra government's proactive measures aim to provide a safe and conducive environment for the girls and women residing in government hostels, enhancing their overall living experience and facilitating their pursuit of education.
