Amidst a fashion environment that’s already striving to find eco-friendly alternatives to animal-derived materials, Kering-owned luxury brands Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga have confirmed their fur-free policies.
According to a report dated March 25 which was released by parent company Kering, both brands will be refraining from any use of fur for their products. Many other brands under the fashion conglomerate’s umbrella like Gucci and Bottega Veneta. have already gone fur-free. Incidentally, Kering has also invested in Bolt Threads, a company that works with a mushroom-based leather alternative.
Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga join a list of ever-increasing luxury brands that have made fur-free commitments like Prada, Stella McCartney, Armani, Versace, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, DKNY, Burberry, and Chanel. According to Humane Society International, the UK government is also considering banning the sale of fur.
The fur industry much like that of leather and other exotic skins has been seeing a demand for more eco-friendly alternatives. Proof of that would be the 258 per cent year on year increase in vegan product stocks in the UK and US, as reported by Vogue Business. They also report a significant decrease in fur sales in European fur companies.
