Cosmetic and personal care company, L’Oreal, has unveiled a new type of cosmetic bottle made entirely from recycled plastic. The bottle has been made using enzymatic recycling technology from biotech company, Carbios. The fact that until now no recycling process has been able to all polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste, makes this new launch innovative and eco-friendly.
In a statement about the new launch, Carbios said, "Only clear plastic [could] be recycled in closed loops, with a loss of quality in each cycle, making it difficult to obtain new products from 100 per cent recycled PET. Our innovation allows infinite recycling of all types of PET waste as well as the production of 100 per cent recycled and 100per cent recyclable PET products, without loss of quality." Not only does Carbios’ new technology allow complete recycling of PET, it is also suitable for all types of PET - clear, coloured, opaque and multilayered, thus adding a huge recycling advantage.
Apart from Carbios, L’Oreal has also collaborated with Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, Suntory Beverage and Food Europe for the development of the innovative recycling technology. The company plans to start using the packaging from 2025 for its new clean beauty brand, Biotherm.
"We have been working with Carbios since 2017 to develop this first bottle made from PET derived from enzymatic recycling technology, an alternative to mechanical recycling. We are pleased to announce today the feasibility of these bottles in a pilot phase and are delighted to be in a position to create the packaging of the future with our partners. This is a promising innovation for the years to come that demonstrates our commitment to bring to market more environmentally friendly packaging and which is part of a circularity initiative begun more than 15 years ago," said L'Oréal's Global Head of Packaging and Product Development in a statement.
