Indian cosmetics and beauty brand, Lakmé, has announced its commitment to refrain from animal testing for its products going forward. Additionally, the Hindustan Unilever-owned brand has joined the PETA US ‘Global Beauty Without Bunnies’ programme, which certifies brands as cruelty-free.
In a press release regarding the commitment, PETA India said, “Lakmé, which is owned by Hindustan Unilever, will now feature the programme's PETA-approved bunny logo on its packaging.”
Lakmé, which is one of the most popular Indian brands when it comes to makeup and beauty products, is now set to join a host of global of cosmetics, personal-care, and household goods brands that have made a similar commitment to not test their products on animals. While the Indian Government banned animal testing on makeup products back in 2014, many Indian companies that produce their products abroad do continue to use animal testing. Additionally, in 2020, the government released the Cosmetics Rules 2020, to include provisions that strengthen the ban on the imports of animal-tested cosmetics.
“Not testing any of our products on animals is critical to our values at Lakmé and is in line with Unilever's Positive Beauty vision. PETA's 'Beauty Without Bunnies' programme is recognised worldwide for its high-quality standards and rigour, and we are proud to be a brand that is officially PETA-approved. With Lakme's range of high-performance and world-class cosmetics, skin-care products, and beauty salons, women can own their look while knowing that the beauty and safety from our products are from scientific alternatives to animal testing," said Lakmé‘s head of innovations Sumati Matti.
