The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, TS Sivagnanam, requested judicial officers to be more sensitive in cases involving human trafficking and those falling under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POSCO Act). He instructed that the statistics regarding the procedural lapse performed by the trial court should be brought in order, ensuring all the procedures are duly followed, enabling faster disposal.
The Chief Justice also shed light on the committee that has been formed under the leadership of Supreme Court judge, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, for this purpose. The committee has been further instructed to develop a training program for judges to guide them on how to handle sensitive matters.
Recently, during the inauguration of the new Additional Sessions Court in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, the Chief Justice announced that a new building has been constructed to resolve the increasing number of pending cases. He also revealed that nearly 2,700 civil cases and over 1,700 sessions cases are pending. A total of 1,032 cases have arisen out of POCSO and the main motive of the new infrastructure is to help reduce the piling backlog.
