The field of mechanics has traditionally been one dominated by men, both in terms of skill and employment opportunities. Indore, however, is making a positive change by launching a first-of-its-kind garage, operated by women mechanics.
Women have faced the constraints of the patriarchal social system for decades, there was a dire need to start a women livelihood program that not only connects women to technology-based employment opportunities but also help them move towards socio-economic justice.
The initiative started by Samman Society is not just unique for Indore, but it is India’s very first garage operated by women. They have been trained as mechanics with the sole aim of furthering the process of social change and seeking job opportunities in non-traditional sectors, thereby breaking the shackles of gender stereotypes.
