In an attempt to ease train travel for mothers travelling with kids, the Lucknow Division of Northern Railways recently launched a 'baby berth'. The lower berths already reserved for women have been placed next to baby berths so that young children can travel with their mothers without any inconvenience. The fitted baby seat is foldable and secured with a stopper. At present, these new berths meant for young children have been installed in some trains on a trial basis. According to official information, two berths have been added in the Lucknow Mail going from Lucknow to New Delhi. The Railways will not charge any extra fare for the seat meant for infants.
On the initiative, some positive responses from netizens have come. 'Applauding this move for adding a child friendly space for travelling,' wrote a Twitter user.
Another user shared how difficult it has been for mothers all the while when travelling with kids. 'Welcome step by @RailMinIndia much needed. Have experienced the pain of not having baby berth and sleepless nights while protecting infants. This will certainly make train journey comfortable for people travelling with babies. Hope to see this getting implemented soon.'
Some netizens have also shared their concern over the new berths. 'Not a good design at all! No mother would keep her baby on that side, also there is more risk of anything falling from upper berths on it. The guard hole is big enough for a baby to escape out and it seems too risky. Good initiative, but no,' said one user. Lauding the move, a user also shared some suggestions, 'A much appreciated move by @RailMinIndia Just one suggestion: The side railing in #Baby berth needs to be more covered up. Babies can easily pass through this one. But, thank you so much for such utterly useful #MothersDay gift.'
