Widows in Vrindavan defy conservative norms and enthusiastically celebrate Holi
On March 6, 2023, the widows of Vrindavan celebrated Holi. The Radha Gopinath Temple, one of the seven temples in the city, hosted the festivities for the first time in two years, due to the pandemic.
Many elderly women participated and were happy to welcome change with open arms, after years of monotony, thanks to oppressive and conservative notions. The women applied colours to the feet of Lord Krishna's statue, sang traditional Holi songs, and showered each other with flower petals.
These celebrations defy traditional beliefs that prohibit widows from participating in the festival of colours and other celebrations.
