Teenage climate activist, Greta Thunberg, condemned the fashion industry over its huge negative impact on the environment in a recent interview with Vogue Scandinavia. Thunberg, who has become a dynamic part of the global climate change movement in recent times, featured as the cover star of the magazine.
In the interview, she admitted how she rarely buys anything new. She said, “The last time I bought something new was three years ago and it was second-hand. I just borrow things from people I know.”
In a tweet, featuring a picture from the interview spread, she said, “The fashion industry is a huge contributor to the climate-and ecological emergency, not to mention its impact on the countless workers and communities who are being exploited around the world in order for some to enjoy fast fashion that many treat as disposables.” She also tweeted pointing out how greenwashing has been prevalent in recent times, “Many make it look as if the fashion industry is starting to take responsibility, spending fantasy amounts on campaigns portraying themselves as “sustainable”, ”ethical”, ”green”, ”climate neutral” or ”fair”. But let’s be clear: This is almost never anything but pure greenwash.”
While Thunberg made it a point to comment about the fashion industry as a whole, she also went on to hint at the impact that the fast fashion culture has on the environment. She said in a tweet, “You cannot mass produce fashion or consume “sustainably” as the world is shaped today. That is one of the many reasons why we will need a system change.”
