Just as we were getting over one of the most eventful red carpet moments of the Met Gala 2021, we have yet another event and some notable red carpet looks to fathom. While Emmy winner Michaela Coel’s moving speech dedicated to sexual assault survivors was one of the most inspiring moments of the event, there were some highlights on the red carpet as well that were hard to miss.
Emmys’ Gender-Neutral Moments
Apart from the striking, bright-coloured monotone looks that seemed like a trend this year at the Emmys red carpet, there was another theme underway that seemed to strike the inclusivity cords perfectly.
Billy Porter has awed audiences and fans time and again with gender-neutral looks that are nothing short of fabulous, one of the most memorable ones being the blazer and gown hybrid he sported on the 2019 Oscars red carpet. For the Emmys this year, the actor opted for an all-black ensemble along with pleated arm details from Ashi Studio, complemented by a pair of Harry Halim high heels.

Saturday Night Live star, Bowen Yang, gave his classic suit look a metallic twist with his Syro silver-toned heeled boots. Queer-owned and run footwear brand Syro is known for its gender-neutral shoe and heel styles.

Another celebrity slaying a gender-neutral look was American actor Carl Clemons-Hopkins. The actor wore a Christian Siriano ensemble which involved a shoulder-revealing top with a pair of trousers, a cummerbund, and bright coloured sash detailing.

Gender Awareness In Fashion
Gender-neutral moments on the red carpet, which are becoming increasingly common with time, help greatly normalise the concept of blurring gender lines in clothing. Be it Jaden Smith and his looks involving skirts and dresses, or Fantastic Beasts’ Ezra Miller and his unique yet gender-fluid red carpet looks, they have helped bring awareness to the topic in question. Closer to home, actor Ranveer Singh has slayed a skirt outfit more than once and left Indian audiences in awe.

While men adorning outfits that are often considered feminine is something more noticeable amongst the masses, women opting for androgynous outfits like tailored suits is now a common phenomenon. With women across the globe sporting what are believed to be conventionally masculine silhouettes, fashion has had gender-inclusive moments time and again throughout history.
