When Mary-Kate Olsen’s paparazzi pictures with her extremely worn-out Hermès bag started emerging, little did one know that this was going to be a trend everyone would love. Recently, actor Julia Fox was also seen showing off her beat-up Hermès on TikTok, narrating how it had been through a lot. And as Jane Birkin said in a CBS interview, “They wear really well.” This, followed by a number of social media influencers talking about vintage bags made one thing clear- the beat-up bag is in!
While it’s easier to jump on this latest fashion trend by simply bringing out your old worn-out bags and taking pride in their ripped-off seams, worn-out leather and scratch marks, what if you don’t own one? The answer is rather simple: pre-loved. When the second-hand fashion revolution was in its early phase, reselling platforms and customers often took to pieces with less wear and tear, usually priced higher for their good condition. But with this trend doing the rounds, more worn-out brands are sure to become hot-selling.
If this trend wasn’t enough of a sign that the more conscious route of second-hand will be a hot one, the number game will surely convince you. As per a report by second-hand and thrift store ThredUp, the second-hand business is expected to grow 127 per cent by 2026. Furthermore, as reported by Statista, the global market value of second-hand and resale apparel was estimated to be worth US$96 billion in 2021.
While second-hand itself is the way forward for many consumers, increasing values of luxury handbags have proven to be quite the investment in past years. According to Art Market Research, the investment potential of handbags out staged that of rare artwork, cars and even whiskey. The market, which is valued at $72 billion currently, is expected to reach $100 billion in 2027. Bags from the iconic luxury brand Chanel, for example, have shown high retaining value. The brand’s Deauville Tote and Grand Shopping Tote have a retaining average value of 112 per cent and 110 per cent respectively.
