Disha Naik, a dedicated firefighter in the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit at Manohar International Airport (MIA) in Mopa, has shattered gender norms by becoming India's first certified female firefighter to operate a crash fire tender,a specialised fire engine designed for use in aircraft rescue and firefighting at aerodromes, airports, and military air bases.
From Application To Certification
Disha's journey is testament to her determination and extensive training. In November 2021, she applied for a position in the Airport Rescue & Firefighting Department at MIA. Her persistent dedication led her to successfully meet all prerequisites, and on July 1, 2022, she officially became the first certified female firefighter from Goa.
Shortly after joining the airport, she expressed her interest in operating the crash fire tender (CFT), specifically designed for aircraft rescue and firefighting. She underwent six months of intensive external training in Tamil Nadu, equipping her with the essential skills and knowledge required for the demanding role of a CFT operator.
Rigorous Training For Aircraft Rescue Operations
Disha's journey mirrored that of her male counterparts; she received no special treatment based on her gender. Her dedication and skills were put to the test through evaluation by a special board of experts, assessing her driving and operational abilities. Disha's outstanding performance resulted in her certification as India's first female firefighter authorised to operate the CFT.
