Parisian brand Coperni’s Spring/Summer 2023 show in Paris ended with quite a gasp moment. Model Bella Hadid went on to be sprayed on by a group of scientists with a liquid that turned into the fabric of a stylish off-shoulder white dress. As she strutted off in this instant creation of a dress, the audience, both at the show and ones watching virtually, were left to wonder- is this the future of dressing and fashion? It might as well be, thanks to Fabrican, the company responsible for the patented spray-on technique used to make the Coperni dress.
Fabrican uses a unique technology that allows a liquid containing cotton or synthetic fibres to be suspended in a polymer solution which evaporates as it comes in contact with the body. Essentially, it creates an instant, spray-able, non-woven fabric. Fabrican’s technology not only uses no ozone-depleting substances but can also be turned back into solution for reuse after wearing. Thus, Fabrican’s technology can be used in fashion for multiple purposes including repairing or recycling clothes, extending garment lengths, adding details like pockets as well as creating clothing with UV protection.

Among Fabrican’s many fashion-related solutions is also an eco-friendlier alternative to leather. Its spray-on technology also enables the creation of a synthetic leather made from natural fibres and bio-origin binders, resulting in a suede-like plant-based leather.
Besides Fabrican’s use in the world of sustainable fashion, the technology has many uses in the health care, industrial and design sector, as well as environmental applications. Fabrican’s Spray-on fabric © Oil Boom offers solutions to effectively manage seaborne oil spills in the way of spill containment, maintaining spill positions, facilitating recovery operation as well as barrier protection.
