Billie Eilish has been named the 2021 Person of the Year by PETA. This comes after the singer’s continued commitment to protecting animals and advocating conscious fashion. At 19, Eilish is also the youngest individual to win the annual award from PETA.
"She gets people to listen—and not only to her music," said PETA in an official statement. Off late, Eilish made headlines when she walked the Met Gala red carpet in a dreamy Oscar de la Renta ensemble, but not before convincing the brand to stop using fur. The Grammy winner, who was also the co-chair of the event was also responsible for influencing the menu to be turned all-vegan for the event.
Furthermore, earlier this year, she also partnered with sportswear giant Nike for a vegan Air Jordan shoe collection. The collection included sneakers that were made of 100 per cent vegan leather and more than 20 per cent recycled material.
The singer also launched her perfume line, Eilish, which was neither made with any animal-derived ingredients nor tested on animals. The perfume line was evidently an extension of Eilish’s holistic approach to a vegan lifestyle.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement, "Billie Eilish is making sure that the party's over for meaty, milky meals as well as for leather, fur, and silk. PETA is happier than ever to celebrate her for seizing every opportunity to point out that vegan fashion and foods are kinder to the animals and the planet we share with them."
PETA India also announced award recipients as the organisation celebrated World Vegan Day last month. Awardees included Indian vegan shoe brand Paio, Alia Bhatt’s Ed-a-mamma for being the Best Vegan Kidswear Brand, Milind Soman bagged the Vegan Fashion Style Icon, and Sunny Leone’s I am Animal won the Best Activewear Brand, among many other conscious fashion winners in the list. As climate change and habitat conservation become of utmost importance, vegan and conscious fashion has been gaining more popularity amongst fashion-lovers across the globe.
