It's that time of the year again! December is upon us, and along with it, the festive season in full swing. While many of us are gearing up for the joyous year-end celebrations, it's essential to acknowledge that not everyone feels the same way. The holiday season can bring about a lesser-discussed flipside, triggering feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression for some individuals.
According to Dr Bhasker Malu, Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean, Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences, OP Jindal Global University, ‘These feelings, commonly known as the 'winter blues,' often stem from the unspoken expectation that everyone should be in high spirits during the holidays. The pressure to conform to a festive mood can lead to quite the opposite effect, making individuals feel burdened and out of sync with the celebratory atmosphere.’
Dr Bhasker gives us pointers on how to handle the infamous 'Winter Blues':
Acknowledge Your Feelings:
• Avoiding your emotions won't solve the problem. If you're not in the mood for celebrations due to personal challenges, it's okay. Honour your feelings, take the time to heal, and allow yourself to experience any sadness or grief.
Be Realistic And True To Yourself:
• The festive season doesn't have to be perfect or adhere to past traditions. Embrace change and be open to new sources of happiness. Understand that what makes you happy can evolve, and that's perfectly normal.
Set Boundaries:
• Learn to say ’No‘ whenever needed. Setting boundaries is a crucial form of self-care. If a social event or activity feels overwhelming, don't hesitate to skip it. Free yourself from peer pressure and alleviate unnecessary burdens.
Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
Beyond the holiday blues, some individuals experience a more prolonged and recurrent form of seasonal mood changes known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This type of depression is characterised by a predictable pattern, with symptoms typically emerging in the fall or winter months. But fear not! There are simple and effective ways to cope with SAD and bring some sunshine back into your life. By taking small steps and incorporating these positive habits into your routine, you can navigate the winter season with resilience and a smile on your face. So here's to beating the winter blues, and embracing the warmth, even on the coldest days!
1. Maximize Natural Light: Spend time outdoors or use a light therapy box for a mood boost.
2. Stay Active: Engage in daily walks, workouts, or activities you enjoy.
3. Socialize and Connect: Connect with friends and family, join clubs, or attend events.
4. Create a Cozy Space: Transform your space with soft lighting, blankets, and houseplants.
5. Establish Routine: Set a consistent daily routine for better sleep and anticipation.
