Sustainable shoemaker Allbirds has made its in-house carbon footprint calculator, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tool, available to all. The tool will enable brands to calculate product carbon footprints (kg CO2e) through each products materials, manufacturing, transportation and end of life phases. The tool also comes with a manual explaining how it works.
The sustainable brand uses a version of the same tool in order to quantify the carbon footprints of each product and make the same available to consumers buying their products. The brand, known best for its carbon-neutral shoes also uses recycled shoelaces, merino wool and sugarcane foam midsole. Overall, Allbirds, who doesn’t shy away from the fact that it does pollute the planet, has a carbon footprint of +7.6 KG CO2e.
Additionally, Allbirds also called upon big fashion names like Zara, Adidas, Burberry, H&M, Nike and more to use the LCA tool and to try being more transparent about their products’ sustainability through an email. The brand also urged shoppers to sign a petition asking the fashion industry to disclose carbon footprints.
Among many of its sustainability initiatives, Allbirds is also working on launching its lowest Carbon Footprint running shoe to date in collaboration with sportswear giant Adidas.
