The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s latest fundraising event, better known as the Met Gala, took place recently in New York. While the gala’s attendees made heads turn in larger-than-life outfits, some championing conscious fashion by sporting vintage pieces, a few sustainable details from the event stood out.
For the second time in a row, the event’s carpet was made by Indian brand Neytt by Extraweave. The white carpet was woven by artisans in Kerala, using Sisal fibre, which is derived from the Agave cactus plant, making it completely biodegradable. The brand made a whopping total of 6,960 square meters of sturdy fabric for the carpet. The ivory carpet was then hand-painted by artists in New York with red and blue details. The Sisal fibre was also featured by the brand in the 2022 Met Gala carpet when Neytt took India to the Met Gala for the first time ever.
Founded by Sivan Santhosh and Nimisha Srinivas, Neytt’s brand story is deeply rooted in values of sustainability and innovation. The brand uses seagrass, water hyacinth, lyocell, bamboo silk, linen and recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate), coupled with age-old craftsmanship, to create its products.
Other sustainability highlights of the Met Gala 2023:
Notably, the handwoven carpet from Kerala wasn’t the only sustainability highlight at the event. The hedges that lined the carpet on each side were light installations made from recycled water bottles and were lit with a blue glow. The chandeliers used to decorate the ceiling matched the hedges and were also made from recycled bottles. Further, the bottles used will be recycled for future use after the event.
