A colourful mural portraying a stack of books and a girl reading under an electric bulb on the side wall of a major flyover in Kashmere Gate neighbourhood is attracting attention for both its artwork and its social message.
The colourful artwork was created as part of a North Delhi Municipal Corporation project in collaboration with Delhi Street Art.
Shashanka Ala, Deputy Commissioner, City-Sadar Paharganj Zone of the NDMC said, “A loud and clear message of girl child education has been sent to the residents of Delhi through this artwork.”
Similar installations have been completed in the National Capital before by Delhi Street Art, a collective of artists.
It collaborated with a group of hearing-impaired people in the city in 2017 to turn a section of a drab external wall of a major flyover in south Delhi into a colourful canvas, with a loud and obvious societal message that deafness is normal and sign language is not taboo.
The mural's goal, according to Ala, is to inspire girls to attend school. It depicts the generation's shift from darkness to light through investing in literature and education for children, particularly girls. "The mural also depicts the symbolic need to revive our classics and impart valuable cultural and historic lessons to our children and help them fly," she added.
'Ramcharitmanas,' 'Mahabharat,' 'Great Expectations,' 'Meghdoot,' 'Godan' and other works on various subjects are among the stack of books represented on the wall canvas.
The large message on the wall also conveys, “Wah Jo Andhere Ko Roshan Karti Hai, Wah Jo Jeevan Ka Shrot Hai: Wah Ek Beti Hai" (The one who dispels the darkness, the one who is a source of life; She is a daughter).
