Sportswear brand Nike is no stranger to offering sustainable alternatives to its iconic and stylish sneakers. Its new collection called ‘Happy Pineapple’ comes as no surprise. The collection comprises of five of its most iconic sneaker styles: the Air Max 90, the Air Max 95, the Air-Zoom Type, the Nike Air Force 1 Premium and the Nike Air Force 1 LX.
The six-sneaker collection is made using Piñatex, which is made from the fibrous waste of pineapple leaves. The material, piñatex, is created using waste from pineapple harvesting that would instead end up being burnt, producing harmful CO2 emissions. Other materials used in the sneakers include cork, rubber and recycled materials. Each product page mentions the amount of recycled materials used to make the pair by weight. For example, the Happy Pineapple Nike Air Max 95 NRG contains at least 20 per cent recycled content by weight. The new range of sneakers sticks to an earthy and pastel-coloured palette with an embroidered pineapple of the tongue of each shoe as well as the produce code at the toe.
Earlier this year, Nike also launched the Reuse-A-Shoe Programme to help restore, donate or recycle unwanted sneakers and offers many apparel and shoe products made from either 50 per cent or 20 per cent recycled content respectively.
