As per the latest statistics, the National Commission for Women (NCW) received 30,957 complaints of crimes committed against women, a number which rose from 30,864 complaints received in 2021. According to the NCW, the 2022 number is the highest since the year 2014. The number of complaints is also up by 30 per cent from the year 2020 at around 23,700 complaints.
Out of the total 30,957 complaints, a maximum of 9,710 were related to the right to live with dignity, followed by 6,982 domestic violence complaints, dowry harassment complaints at 4,613, complaints of molestation at 2,527, rape-related complaints at 1,711 and police apathy against women at 1,625. Other complaints included cybercrime, sexual harassment, honour crimes and dowry deaths. The categories that saw a fall in numbers compared to 2021 included the right to live with dignity and molestation-related complaints. Domestic violence and dowry-related complaints remained approximately the same.
The state-wise distribution of stats highlighted that a majority of complaints amounting to 54.5 per cent of complaints were received from the state of Uttar Pradesh, followed by Delhi at 9.7 per cent and Maharashtra at 4.5 per cent. Close on the list were Bihar and Haryana at 4.4 per cent as well as Madhya Pradesh at 3.7 per cent. Furthermore, the highest number of complaints received from Uttar Pradesh included those related to the right to live with dignity and domestic violence.
