As Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, it faces a tough fight. Women across the country–including members of parliament, are taking up arms to protect their beloved country. While speaking to a media house, Ukrainian Member of Parliament Kira Rudik discussed plans to organise groups against Russia. Lesia Vasylenko, another Ukrainian MP joined the battle and urged foreigners to be a part of the resistance forces. She said, “We are a country in complete war. There is no time for somebody to give you training and lessons. Everybody is busy with their tasks.”
She referred to the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine–a group being formed for those who want to join the troops. She mentioned that foreigners could now sign up at the Ukraine embassies in their respective countries to help the country stand its ground against the Russian forces.
As photographs and videos emerge from the frontlines, a clip of an unidentified Ukrainian soldier has gone viral on social media. She is dressed in military gear and is heard saying “I’m still alive, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, everything will be fine. Long live Ukraine.” The optimism from the country has been heartbreaking as well as comforting for the millions of people across the world who are watching this war unfold from their homes.
