In a rather progressive move, the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, has announced extended maternity and paternity leave for government employees. Addressing the Sikkim State Civil Service Officers' Association (SSCSOA) at their annual general meeting, the CM revealed that the government will grant a 12-month maternity leave and a 1-month paternity leave to its employees.
The details of the extended leave policy will be made public soon, once changes are implemented in the service rules. Currently, under the Maternity Benefit Act 1961, working women are entitled to 6 months (or 26 weeks) of paid maternity leave, making Sikkim's decision a significant improvement in terms of work-life balance for employees. Moreover, the government has also focused on streamlining the promotion process for civil services officers, leading to an increase in the number of promotions, which further motivates and rewards their contributions.
This initiative is aimed at supporting government employees in taking better care of their children and families. Additionally, offering paternity leave recognises the vital role fathers play in parenting and encourages them to actively participate in childcare responsibilities.
With the introduction of extended maternity and paternity leave, the state aims to set an example for other regions, highlighting the importance of work-life balance and family welfare in today's society.
