In their golden years, Laxmi Ammal (90) and Kasthuri Sivaraman (72) have defied traditional notions of entrepreneurship by starting a farm stay business. Despite being brought up in conservative families and lacking confidence throughout their lives, this mother-daughter duo overcame their fears and built Vaksana Farmstay on their organic farm in Rettanai Village, Tamil Nadu. Despite age-related ailments and language barriers, they took charge of the business in 2021 and have already hosted over 200 guests.
Although only high school graduates, the women gradually gained courage and self-confidence, becoming financially independent through their cooking skills, which they honed over the years. Their success has not only given guests a taste of fresh farm food and village life, but has also provided employment opportunities for locals.
Through their teamwork, the mother-daughter relationship has blossomed, and their story is a testament to the adage that it is never too late to pursue one's dreams. Despite facing significant personal losses, Laxmi Ammal's spirit remains unbroken and, together with her daughter, they are breaking the mould of entrepreneurship in their retirement years.
