Entertainment has long played it safe—leaning on predictable, male-centric narratives. But Jio Studios stands as a disruptor, leading Indian cinema with stories that entertain, stories that are powered by the commitment to social and environmental progress. Jyoti Deshpande, President – Media & Content Business, RIL, in conversation with Her Circle, delves into the impactful journey of Jio Studios this year and how it is redefining the landscape of Indian entertainment, one story at a time.
With massive successes like Laapataa Ladies—now in the Oscar race as Lost Ladies—and the record-breaking Stree 2, Jio Studios is proving that stories with soul and purpose can be both commercially viable and socially transformative. "It’s in the script, the story is important ” she emphasises, “layered, nuanced, and universally relatable."
2024 is testimony that Jio Studios is more than a film production house; it’s a movement of cinematic change. With over 70 per cent of women in leadership roles and a commitment to discovering new talent, the studios is determined to take Indian entertainment to global platforms.
Jyoti believes in the democratisation of content, and storytelling as a powerful tool to unify the country. “Why should a Marathi story be limited to Maharashtrians or a Punjabi film be watched by Punjabis?” she asks.
Storytelling is all set to bridge cultural and global gaps, and this is just the beginning.
All eyes are on Lost Ladies—fingers crossed, we're cheering for its Oscar win.
