Saaisha India Foundation is a women-run charitable organisation which provides free knitted or crocheted breast prosthetics for women who have undergone mastectomies. Founded in 2018 by Jayashree Ratan and a group of friends in 2016, the organisation has extended support to women across the nation by making these prosthetics and delivering them to women free of charge. From one beneficiary to thousands, the women behind Saaisha—the majority of them are above 50 years of age—have come together to support breast cancer survivors, and are hoping to extend their support to women in government hospitals.
As a women-led team, these women also have each other’s backs, and have supported each other by staying connected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic as well. Team Her Circle connected with team Saaisha, and the discussion that ensued encompassed everything from the dignity of women patients, the valuable and philanthropic work done by the organisation, and how each woman volunteer (from among a strength of 280) wishes that more women come together to fight against stigma and for equality.
